Bar Design Layout Guidelines

Bars have been an integral part of human societies and there is evidence that they existed during the Babylonian times. Although alcohol and wine were used for medicinal purposes, watered-down beer like beverages were very common. The prohibition on serving alcohol was lifted in 1933 when it became legal, but heavy taxes were levied on them with tough regulations.

A bar design layout is usually a traditional one that has been followed through time with only a few changes. We shall now understand the basics behind setting up a bar design. Most pubs follow a common feature while laying out a bar design, that is the cabinets of liquors are set at the rear wall behind the back bar. The 3 significant parts of a bar design are : the front bar, the back bar, and the under bar. The tools used by the bartender are often stored under the bar, while the back bar is the portion of the wall behind the front or under bar where the merchandise is displayed. The bartender serves the drink on the front bar.

A well designed bar design is necessary for various reasons, since it increases the efficiency by way of profits, it also keeps the bartender in good spirits as they have limited space for preparing a drink. The bartender has a special duty of mixing wines and spirits, drink preparation, beverage services, merchandising, and building customer relationships. There are other acts he performs such as Flairtending – flipping, spinning, throwing, balancing, catching bottles during the process of mixing a drink. Therefore, it is necessary to give good space for the bartender while a bar design is laid.

Coming to the appropriate dimensions of a bar design needs to be assessed depending upon the space available, the bar furniture catalogue, size of bar stools, cabinets and other equipment. The height of the bar to be 42”-45”, the bar width should be 24”-30”, the inside edge of the bar top has to overhang where the soda, beer, electrical and plumbing lines are hidden. The walking space behind the bar should be 3’ wide minimum, front bar width should be either 2’ 10” or 3’6” depending on a single tier bar or a two tier bar. The bar stool area needs a minimum of 3’ area to move bar stools.
